14Title:  [General orders and circulars]
Creator:  United States Navy. Western Gulf Blockading Squadron.
Publication:  Western Gulf Blockading Squadron], New Orleans, La,
Notes:  As Commander-in-chief, the President is empowered to issue orders to his command. Such orders, which freqently emanate from the Secretary of War or the Headquarters of the Army, are designated as General and Special Orders. The commanders of military divisions and departments make and publish their own General and Special Orders which have similar force and effect as the Orders of the President, though within a narrower range. General Orders cover a great variety of particulars connected with the discipline, employment, pay, subsistence, quartering, transportation and supply of the army. Many General Orders are not orders at all but a means of promulgating to the army new legislation of Congress, military regulations made or amended, appointments and promotions of officers, the opinions of military courts, or other information important to the service. Presidential actions upon the proceedings of general courts-martial were incorporated within General Orders until 1864. Since then, they have Title from cataloger. Some items are unnumbered and have "circular" in left corner.

15Title:  The Two roads to peace!: How shall we end the rebellion--shall we coax it, or crush it? Every American citizen wants the Rebellion ended and peace restored. Two plans have been proposed for doing it: one, by a convention which met at Baltimore June 7; the other, by the convention which met at Chicago, August 30. Read and compare the two

"Fellow-citizens! These are plain and practical issues: study them well ... If we surrender to the Rebellion, the Union is gone forever. If we fight the rebels a little longer, it is safe forever. If we give them to understand, in November next, that the only road to peace lies through the victory of the national arms, the contest is over! The election of Lincoln and Johnson is the death-knell of the Rebellion!!" Printed area measures 27.2 x 19.7 cm.

16Title:  The Platforms: Baltimore. The National Convention which assembled at Baltimore on the 7th of last June, and there nominated Abraham Lincoln for re-election as president, with Andrew Johnson as vice-president, adopted and presented to the American people the following platform. ... Chicago. The Democratic National Convention which gathered at Chicago on the 29th of August, and presented the name of George B. McClellan for president, and George H. Pendleton for vice-president, agreed on and adopted the following platform. ... Points of difference. The rival platforms just given, differ, as will be seen, mainly on these points: ... Freemen of the United States! read, mark, weigh, resolve, and vote! This is preèeminently a contest regarding important principles and measures, compared with which, personal considerations are of small account
